This federal Cooperative Agreement award from the Bureau of Reclamation, under the Water Desalination Research and Development program (CFDA 15.506), provides $713,865.71 to the Regents of the University of Colorado for a research and development project to improve reverse osmosis desalination technology. The key objectives are to integrate a smart scaling precursor detection system with a reverse osmosis demonstration unit to minimize operational issues, and to test a novel concentrate recovery...
This Cooperative Agreement award from the U.S. Department of the Interior Bureau of Reclamation under the Water Desalination Research and Development Program (CFDA 15.506) provides $733,555.62 to support field testing of advanced reverse osmosis water treatment technologies. The project aims to demonstrate the performance of "batch reverse osmosis" and "active reverse osmosis" membrane systems in treating high total dissolved solids brackish groundwater with mineral scaling...
The U.S. Department of the Interior Bureau of Reclamation awarded a $600,493.97 Cooperative Agreement to Pure Blue TECH Inc., doing business as Pure Blue, under the SECURE Water Act - Research Agreements program (CFDA 15.560). The funding supports the manufacturing and field piloting of novel anti-fouling nanopatterned ultrasonic reverse osmosis (RO) membrane elements for efficient, high-recovery desalination of brackish water and purification of surface water. The key innovation is the...
This Cooperative Agreement award from the U.S. Department of the Interior Bureau of Reclamation, under the Water Desalination Research and Development Program (CFDA 15.506), aims to demonstrate a continuous pilot photobioreactor operation using sunlight to remove scaling compounds from reverse osmosis concentrate. The project team at Texas State University has developed a new photobiological process that utilizes brackish diatoms and natural sunlight to remove scalants such as silica, phosphate,...
The Canadian River Municipal Water Authority (CRMWA) received a $1,924,980 Project Grant from the U.S. Department of the Interior's Bureau of Reclamation under the Water Recycling and Desalination Construction Programs (CFDA 15.504). The grant will fund a feasibility study to evaluate the potential for using reverse osmosis desalination to remove chloride from the Canadian River and maximize the use of water from Lake Meredith. This is intended to help address the region's water supply...
This Cooperative Agreement award from the U.S. Department of the Interior Bureau of Reclamation under the Desalination and Water Purification Research (DWPR) program (CFDA 15.506) is funding the development of a novel batch-operated reverse osmosis desalination process called "batch counterflow reverse osmosis." The $490,305.48 award to Purdue University aims to create the first experimental lab-scale demonstration of this technology and develop a fundamental understanding of its...
This Cooperative Agreement award from the U.S. Department of the Interior's Bureau of Reclamation under the SECURE Water Act - Research Agreements program (CFDA 15.560) provides $415,091.10 to the Orange County Water District (OCWD) to evaluate the feasibility of removing per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) from reverse osmosis concentrate. The project will assess the effectiveness of treating reverse osmosis concentrate using adsorbent media like granular activated carbon and ion...
The Department of the Interior Bureau of Reclamation awarded a $1,001,044.18 Cooperative Agreement to Carollo Engineers Inc. on August 24, 2023 under the SECURE Water Act - Research Agreements program (CFDA 15.560). The project will test an in-situ resin regeneration process using bicarbonate for potable water reuse applications. This approach aims to remove dissolved organic matter and inorganic anions such as nitrate, nitrite, phosphate, and others from the water without producing the large...
This $1,257,873 cooperative agreement from the Department of the Interior Bureau of Reclamation will fund research at the Colorado School of Mines to improve reverse osmosis desalination technology for remote communities. Under the Water Desalination Research and Development program (CFDA 15.506), the School of Mines will augment a 20 gallon per minute, 8-element reverse osmosis unit from DuPont Water Solutions with smart scaling precursor detection and resource recovery from concentrate to...
The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation awarded a $391,660.68 Cooperative Agreement to the Regents of the University of California, Riverside (UC Riverside) under the Water Desalination Research and Development program (CFDA 15.506). The goal of this 2-year project is to test a novel vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) light-driven photochemical process for treating nitrate and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) from inland desalination brine. The project will develop an innovative VUV system to overcome...

REVERSE OSMOSIS MEMBRANES CAN BE HIGHLY EFFECTIVE IN REMOVING PATHOGENS. NONETHELESS, IN MOST REGULATORY JURISDICTIONS, REVERSE OSMOSIS RECEIVES ZERO TREATMENT CREDIT OR LOG REMOVAL VALUE FOR PATHOGEN REMOVAL INACTIVATION. THIS GAP IN REGULATORY ACKNOWLEDGEMENT BECOMES SIGNIFICANT IN DESIGN OF TREATMENT PROCESSES FOR POTABLE REUSE WHERE ADDITIONAL TREATMENT MUST BE IMPLEMENTED TO ATTAIN THE NECESSARY LOG REMOVAL VALUES. THIS PROPOSAL IS DESIGNED TO FACILITATE THE IDENTIFICATION AND EVALUATION OF STRATEGIES FOR GAINING PATHOGEN REMOVAL CREDIT FOR REVERSE OSMOSIS IN POTABLE REUSE IN TEXAS AND BEYOND.
