This $419,463 Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's Engineering program (CFDA 47.041) will support research by Georgia Tech Research Corporation to investigate enhanced electrochemical oxidation methods for the destruction of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in water. The project aims to systematically study the influence of electric field strength on PFAS electromigration and oxidative degradation, leveraging locally enhanced electric field treatment (LEEFT) to...
This Cooperative Agreement award, provided by the National Science Foundation under the Technology, Innovation, and Partnerships (CFDA 47.084) program, focuses on developing advanced electrochemical degradation technology for removing per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) from water. The $999,603 award to Elateq, Inc., a small, minority-owned business, aims to create a sustainable, cost-effective, and easily operated on-site solution to destroy these "forever chemicals" that are...
This National Science Foundation Project Grant of $236,645 awarded on March 15, 2022 supports research and development of an advanced electrochemical system for degradation of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in water. The awardee, Elateq, Inc. of Amherst, MA, will design and test a novel cathodic treatment prototype employing reductive and oxidative electrodes and catalyst-coating materials to break down PFAS contaminants in water through electrochemically-induced reduction and...
This National Science Foundation Project Grant of $312,596 awarded on October 1, 2022 will support research at San Diego State University to develop an innovative "trap and destroy" water treatment technology for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). The university will work to optimize adsorptive photocatalysts that can selectively absorb PFAS from water and then destroy the compounds using ultraviolet or solar light. Key deliverables under the 24-month award include...
This $999,940 Cooperative Agreement awarded on March 15, 2024 by the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Technology, Innovation, and Partnerships (TIP) program supports the development and field deployment of Purafide, LLC's plasma-based water treatment technology to address per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) contamination. The project aims to pilot the innovative plasma reactor technology at high-priority PFAS remediation and landfill sites in Michigan, with the goal of achieving PFAS...
The National Science Foundation has awarded a $275,000 Project Grant to Water Illumination Inc., a small minority-owned business, to develop a tunable deep ultraviolet (UV)-based technology for the destruction of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in drinking water. This grant, funded under the NSF Technology, Innovation, and Partnerships (CFDA 47.084) program, aims to create a cost-effective, chemical-free water treatment system capable of nearly complete PFAS elimination without...
This Project Grant award from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), under the Environmental Health (CFDA 93.113) federal grant program, aims to develop a novel at-home test kit for the detection of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in drinking water. The total award amount is $260,993 with a project period from June 1, 2025 to May 31, 2026. The primary goals of this project are to: Optimize the adsorptive and photocatalytic performance of metal-organic...
This $499,988 Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Engineering program (CFDA 47.041) seeks to develop and validate an integrated sorption-photocatalytic process for the ex-situ treatment and remediation of groundwater contaminated by mixtures of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and chlorinated solvents like trichloroethylene (TCE) and tetrachloroethylene (PCE). The principal investigator and research team at Southern Illinois University Carbondale will...
This Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Engineering program (CFDA 47.041) provides $150,000 to Claremont McKenna College to discover enzymatic pathways to break carbon-fluorine bonds in perfluorinated carboxylic acids (PFAS). PFAS are a group of persistent chemicals that are costly to remove from the environment. The project aims to engineer special enzymes that can degrade these stable chemical bonds, which could unlock new technologies for PFAS remediation in...
This federal Cooperative Agreement award, provided by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC), funds the "Validation of Scalable Technologies for Destruction of AFFF Formulations Containing Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS)" project. The $147,893 award, with a period of performance from May 2025 to May 2028, is granted to the Trustees of the Colorado School of Mines (CSM) to conduct research and development on technologies for the...

DESTRUCTION OF PER- AND POLYFLUOROALKYL SUBSTANCES MOLECULES BY ANY METHOD IS AN ENERGY-INTENSIVE ENDEAVOR. BREAKING THE MOLECULES INTO NONTOXIC COMPONENTS REQUIRES BREAKING A MULTITUDE OF CARBON-FLUORINE BONDS, ONE OF THE STRONGEST BONDS IN NATURE. AS A RESULT, ENERGY USE IS AN INHIBITOR AND THE PREDOMINANT COST DRIVER FOR COMMERCIALIZING PER- AND POLYFLUOROALKYL SUBSTANCES DESTRUCTION TECHNOLOGIES. THIS PROJECT WILL TEST A FIELD-SCALE PILOT TO EVALUATE THE TECHNICAL EFFECTIVENESS AND ECONOMIC FEASIBILITY OF COMBINING FOAM FRACTIONATION, A PER- AND POLYFLUOROALKYL SUBSTANCES CONCENTRATION APPROACH, WITH THE PATENTED PER- AND POLYFLUOROALKYL SUBSTANCES DESTRUCTION TECHNOLOGY TO DESTRUCT PER- AND POLYFLUOROALKYL SUBSTANCES IN INDUSTRIAL WASTEWATER AT A COMMERCIAL CHEMICAL PRODUCER. THE SUCCESS CRITERION IS TO CONTINUOUSLY TREAT THE INDUSTRIAL WASTEWATER AT THE REQUIRED FLOW RATE AND DECREASE THE PER- AND POLYFLUOROALKYL SUBSTANCES COMPOUNDS TO CONCENTRATIONS THAT MEET REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS IN THE PLANT DISCHARGE AT AN AFFORDABLE PRICE.
