About this award

The National Park Service (NPS) awarded Save The Redwoods League a $17.8 million cooperative agreement on June 16, 2025, under the Conservation, Protection, Outreach, and Education program (CFDA 15.954) to decommission and remove 50 miles of non-functioning legacy logging roads in Redwood National Park. The project, which extends through April 30, 2030, will deconstruct and remove these degraded roads to eliminate deferred maintenance obligations, reduce ongoing operations and maintenance costs, and restore ecological function to the park. Performance work will be conducted in Crescent City, California, under the collaborative framework of the Redwoods Rising Collaborative.

The primary objectives of this initiative are to eliminate erosion and sediment delivery into streams, protect water quality, restore habitat for listed anadromous fish species, and rehabilitate watersheds disrupted by the historical logging road network. Save The Redwoods League, a non-profit conservation organization with extensive experience in forest restoration and watershed management, will serve as the implementing partner. The project benefits a diverse range of stakeholders, including public and private nonprofit institutions, non-federal government entities, research scientists, engineers, and the general public.
