Description
The state physical activity and nutrition program (span) - michigan department of health and human services division of chronic disease and injury control cardiovascular health, nutrition, and physical activity section elliot-larsen building, 5-n 320 s. Walnut ST. Lansing, MI 48933 over two-thirds of michigan adults are either overweight or obese, 32.5% of 2-4-year-olds from low-income families, and 30% of 9-12TH graders are also overweight or obese. Overweight and obesity increase risk for chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer, stroke, and diabetes, among others. In 2021, an estimated 66,062 of michigan's underlying cause of death was due to these chronic diseases. The purpose of this application is to demonstrate how the michigan department of health and human services (mdhhs) will invest and engage in activities to improve nutrition and increase physical activity for the prevention of obesity. Mdhhs will address health disparities by targeting local communities with the most significant burden of overweight and obesity, the poorest access to healthy foods and places for physical activity, childcare environments that need improvements, and women who have the most difficulty meeting breastfeeding goals. Mdhhs will partner with michigan state university center for regional food systems, michigan farmer's market association and detroit food policy council to improve access to healthy foods by building capacity for local food policy councils to engage in equitable community food security strategies. Mdhhs will increase safe and accessible physical activity opportunities through partnerships with the michigan department of transportation and mparks. Mdhhs will partner with michigan breastfeeding network and coffective to lead the implementation of supportive breastfeeding interventions that includes advancing hospitals toward baby-friendly designation and increasing employer compliance with the federal lactation accommodation law. Mdhhs will also support and expand go-napsacc and promote nutrition standards in childcare licensing and in the quality rating and improvement system (qris) in collaboration with michigan department of education, national kidney foundation of michigan, early childhood investment corporation, and michigan state university extension and center for regional food systems, trinity health, and mdhhs division of maternal and child health. Lastly, mdhhs will develop social marketing and health communication materials to engage and encourage individuals who are seeking support in living healthier lives. These messages will be developed in collaboration with our partners to ensure that materials are culturally appropriate, representative, and relevant. Michigan has demonstrated tremendous capacity in environmental approaches through comprehensive policy and program initiatives in settings such as communities, worksites, and schools, and has worked with 25 local health departments, 87 coalitions, and over 2,300 partners to build healthy communities. Michigan is prepared to implement all span program components with minimal startup.
