The National Resources Conservation Service awarded a $1.75 million cooperative agreement to the Texas State Soil & Water Conservation Board on August 15, 2022 to develop a supplemental plan for two flood retarding structures in Starr County, Texas through February 28, 2025. This funding supports the Watershed Rehabilitation Program (CFDA #10.916), which aims to extend the useful life of dams originally constructed with USDA assistance and ensure they meet applicable safety and performance standards. Under this award, the Texas State Soil & Water Conservation Board will develop a supplemental plan for the Olmitos & Garcias Site 5 flood retarding structures to rehabilitate the dams and bring them up to current safety standards, protecting local communities from flood risks.
