Description

This proposal addresses program priority 2 observations and specifically OBS-3: sfmr improvement and OBS-4 tropical cyclone reconnaissance data advancements by focusing on the sfmr unit calibration and cross-unit calibration. The proposed improvements aim to develop a robust calibration approach that can be applied across all sfmr instruments on reconnaissance aircraft. Sfmr units show variations in calibration and temperature stability that impact radiometer brightness temperature reliability, leading to biases and conflicting observations from different aircraft. Without a standardized calibration approach, diagnostic hardware health and stability tools, utilization of the sfmr data will remain compromised and its utilization in applications very challenging.
