Description

Activities
Our proposed work will combine gonadal maturation, spawning induction, and development of rearing protocols involving a multi-partner effort that will: 1) address reproductive barriers to production of S. Horrens, 2) provide the means and protocols to advance the commercial production of this species; 3) extend the results of the work to industry and hawaiian fishpond practitioners; and 4) support the development of a trained workforce.
Expected outcomes
Results from this proposed study will provide aquaculture practitioners with knowledge to propagate native hawaiian sea cucumbers under different environmental conditions and thereby supporting increased food production and restoration efforts. Optimizing reproductive success of this species will diminish the reliance on the capture of wild stock, which is one of the major threats facing sea cucumbers worldwide.
Intended beneficiaries
If successful, this project will directly benefit hawaiian fishpond practitioners and the hawaii aquaculture industry by developing protocols for reliable and sustainable production of a local, native species of hawaiian sea cucumbers and thus help address the reduction of wild populations due to high fishing pressure.
Subrecipient activities
Kauai sea farms and the pacific american foundation will: 1) assist in sea cucumber propagation by conducting in vivo spawning trials that employ both environmental manipulation and species-specific hormonal trials; and 2) develop specific protocols for rearing sea cucumber larvae and juveniles and monitor developmental stages and growth rates under their distinct environmental conditions.
