Description
- Activities
- Key activities will include enhancing access to satellite-derived data and forecasting tools to support local decision-making during harmful algal bloom events, as well as engaging stakeholders in new regions to expand the use of these tools. The project will also support the outreach and training of new tools such as bloomscope, a machine-learning tool for rapid harmful algal bloom detection. Strengthening communication and knowledge sharing within the sea grant network will also be a priority, with efforts to share ongoing activities, lessons learned and success stories. Additionally, facilitating collaboration and stakeholder participation through workshops and participatory research will further enhance decision-making processes during harmful algal bloom events.
- Expected outcomes
- The project will enhance decision-making by ensuring key stakeholders have access to national centers for coastal ocean science operational and in development research tools, allowing for more timely and informed responses to harmful algal blooms. IT will build the capacity of local communities through training and the development of new tools, helping them better incorporate harmful algal bloom satellite-derived data and forecasting tools into their management strategies. Strengthening collaboration across sea grant programs and national centers for coastal ocean science will foster a sustainable knowledge-sharing network to empower communities with the necessary tools and resources to manage harmful algal bloom risks effectively.
- Intended beneficiaries
- Primary beneficiaries include state/local governments, sea grant extension offices, and community partners in coastal communities, such as state agencies, academia, and industry, who will gain better access to national centers for coastal ocean science operational and in development research tools, forecasting systems, and training to improve harmful algal bloom management. Additionally, sea grant programs and other decision-making bodies will benefit from enhanced collaborations and increased capacity to address harmful algal bloom risks.
