Description

Activities
A set of stock assessment models will be fit to the data of two recreationally important species of the northeast U.S. Models will be fit using the wham-growth branch, which estimates time-varying growth by modeling variation in mean population length-at-age and weight-at-age. Socioeconomic indicators representing trends in fishing fleet diversity, target species, and fishing effort over time will be evaluated and incorporated as model covariates of recreational discards. Wham-growth models with and without socioeconomic covariates will be compared to age-structured assessment models representing traditional stock assessment practices in the northeast U.S. This will be achieved through a simulation testing framework that evaluates the predictive power of each model. Strengths and limitations of different modeling approaches will be compared.
Expected outcomes
This project will evaluate the performance of wham-growth for characterizing recreational fisheries discards in stock assessment models and will assess how socioeconomic data influences stock assessment model predictions. IT will provide a better understanding of the most effective ways to assess the population dynamics of recreationally important species, and will improve our understanding of how socioeconomic conditions affect recreational fisheries outcomes.
Intended beneficiaries
This project aims to improve recreational fisheries stock assessment practices, which will help conserve living marine resources and ecosystems, promote resilient coastal economies, and maintain stakeholder access to recreational fishing. Subrecipient activities this project will not include any subrecipients.
