Description

Activities
This project will create a new computer model that shows how the northern FUR seal population changes based on how much fish they eat, how much energy they get from this prey, how much energy they use, and how changes in the amount of prey affect their survival. The project will combine this new computer model with existing models that predict fish populations under changing ocean conditions. The researcher will work with scientists, fishery managers, and ST. Paul island community members to test different management approaches under various environmental scenarios.
Expected outcomes
This project will improve an existing computer model to make IT better at predicting changes in both fish populations and the northern FUR seal population in the bering sea. This will help scientists and decision-makers create better strategies for managing these marine resources.
Intended beneficiaries
The new models will be free for anyone to use, which will help ensure that science-based decisions are made for the future of the bering sea. Fishery management councils will use these models to make better management decisions for both fish and protected species. In addition, the ST. Paul island community, which depends on northern FUR seals for food security, will have the necessary information to work with the fishing industry. A broader group of stakeholders will have tools to communicate their priorities for management decisions. Finally, as the first example of this type of model, this project will support other fishing regions facing similar challenges with protected marine mammals.
