About this award
The University of Oklahoma's Office of Research Administration received a $1.05 million Cooperative Agreement from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) under the Cooperative Institute (Inter-Agency Funded Activities) program (CFDA 11.405), effective July 1, 2025 through June 30, 2026. This award funds research and development activities to enhance the Multi-Radar/Multi-Sensor (MRMS) system, a critical tool for hydro-meteorological monitoring and forecasting. The project delivers three primary research products: improvements to MRMS computer code robustness to accommodate new radar volume scan strategies; maturation of capabilities for deploying MRMS within cloud computing environments; and integration of additional data sets to enhance the accuracy and robustness of MRMS hydro-meteorological products.
As an invited NOAA Cooperative Institute participant, the University of Oklahoma will conduct this multidisciplinary research in collaboration with NOAA scientists at the performance location in Norman, Oklahoma. The work directly supports NOAA's operational forecasting and environmental science capabilities by advancing the underlying science and technical infrastructure of the MRMS system, which is essential for improved weather prediction, hazard monitoring, and water resource management across the United States.
