About this award
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Marine Debris Program (CFDA 11.999) awarded a $2.63M cooperative agreement to the California Department of Parks and Recreation, effective October 1, 2025, through September 30, 2029. The agreement funds the removal of up to 50 run-down and abandoned boats and 80 vehicles from four counties within the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. Implementation involves six local marine contractor companies executing removal operations while four county sheriff departments coordinate activities through their marine patrol jurisdictions. The project is expected to support approximately 20 jobs across contractor and county staff positions.
The removal effort directly addresses navigation and public safety hazards in a waterway critical to California's water supply and commercial fishery operations, serving 27 million residents and supporting approximately 80% of the state's commercial fishery species. This cooperative agreement approach builds on a proven model previously used successfully in the region. The total federal obligation of $2.90M reflects NOAA's commitment to marine debris removal under the Marine Debris Program, which has distributed $285.9M in cooperative agreements since 2016 to remove derelict vessels, fishing gear, and storm debris from U.S. coastal waters and territories.
Description
Title: sacramento-SAN joaquin delta clean-up the award of $2,633,100 will provide direct assistance to the california department of parks and recreation to remove up to 50 run-down and abandoned boats and 80 vehicles from four counties within the sacramento-SAN joaquin delta. IT will support approximately 20 jobs - from the 6 local marine contractor companies carrying out the removal work, in addition to staff support of those involved from each countys sheriff departments. The project will pay four county sheriff departments to coordinate these removals through their marine patrol jurisdictions. This is an approach that has successfully been used to maintain clean and navigable waterways within these areas in the past. Without this federal funding, the sacramento-SAN joaquin delta, which contributes to drinking water for 27 million californians and supports an estimated 80% of the state's commercial fishery species, will remain at risk due to the debris targets remaining navigational and safety hazards threatening public safety and the local economy.
