About this award

The University of Hawaii at Manoa received a $2,029,590 Cooperative Agreement from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) under the Integrated Ocean Observing System (IOOS) program (CFDA 11.012), effective June 1, 2025, through May 31, 2028. Under Topic 1, the awardee will improve and enhance the Pacific Coastal Ocean Observing System (PacIOOS) through significant asset replacements and upgrades, including high-frequency radar stations and wave buoys for marine operations; near-shore sensors and coastal moorings for water quality monitoring; animal tagging systems for ecosystem and living marine resources assessment; modeling infrastructure; and an acoustic data node for data management.

Under Topic 2, the University of Hawaii will enhance data sharing and integration of federal and non-federal ocean data by advancing priorities identified by regional coastal resource managers through the Pacific Islands Regional Ocean Data Sharing Initiative. Deliverables include coordinated data exchanges and the development of tailored data portals designed to support science-based decision-making and ensure safe, clean, and productive ocean conditions and resilient coastal zones for U.S. Pacific Islands communities over the three-year award period.

Description

Over the next three years, pacioos will continue providing ocean data and information to support science-based decision-making to ensure a safe, clean, and productive ocean and resilient coastal zone for the U.S. Pacific islands. The goal for topic 1 is to improve and enhance specific elements of pacioos that require significant asset replacements and/or upgrades to sustain and improve existing operations. We will advance observing assets within marine operations (high frequency radar stations and wave buoys), water quality (near shore sensors and coastal moorings), ecosystems and living marine resources (animal tagging), modeling, and data management (acoustic data node). For topic 2, the goal is to enhance associated sharing and integration of federal and non- federal data by advancing the priorities of the local coastal resource managers as identified through recent efforts of the regional ocean data sharing initiative in the pacific islands region. We will coordinate data exchanges and build a tailored data portal or portals for the managers.
