Description

For topic area 1, aoos prioritized the upgrade of aging assets for several of our key core observing programs specifically the upgrade of autonomous underwater vehicles (auvs or gliders), high frequency radars (hfrs), ecosystem moorings, passive acoustic monitoring (PAM), weather stations installed on automatic identification system (AIS) systems, water level sensors, and partial funding for a winch key to a long-term monitoring program. These assets have been operating in the extremely challenging environment of alaska for more than 10 years (in many cases), so are in dire need of upgrades or replacements to be able to continue operations. For topic area 2, aoos prioritized programs that support underserved communities with a high priority on continued support of alaska native programs. Aoos focused on continuing to support community-led observing programs already funded through base and 2022-2024 BIL regional ocean partnership (ROP) funding, such as the alaska native science & engineering program (ansep) internship program, skipper science, alaska arctic observatory & knowledge hub (aaokh), and sea ICE for walrus outlook (siwo).
