Description
Spinner dolphins in the main hawaiian islands have been categorized into three separate island-associated stocks, namely hawaii island, oahu / maui NUI, and kauai / niihau. This project proposal is intended to address remaining data gaps concerning the oahu / maui NUI stock. This project will a) investigate the movements of animals, both around individual islands and between islands; b) estimate the abundance of spinner dolphins throughout the full oahu/maui NUI stock; and c) improve upon the estimates of abundance and movement patterns of spinner dolphins off oahu and investigate the possibility of novel and cost-effective methodologies for future monitoring, such as the development of a leeward (west) side proxy site.
