Description

Physical and biological sources also contribute to ambient sound. Oceanographic and physical features including water column and bathymetric properties govern short and long range acoustic propagation, and influence the manner in which these various sound sources combine to create local soundscapes across the region. Elevated noise is a concern for efforts to restore potentially damaged marine mammal stocks in the gulf of america because these species rely on sound for communication and foraging success, and are sensitive to anthropogenic sound sources. The goal of this project is to collect passive acoustic recordings at long and short term sites of interest in the gulf of america and to quantify anthropogenic noise sources and ambient sound levels in these datasets in inform restoration projects funded from the deepwater horizon oil spill settlement.
