Description

The marsh was constructed by pumping sediment from the mississippi river into marsh creation areas (MCAS), resulting in a network of tidal channels and a tidally connected pond in the marsh interior. Despite the success of similar projects in the past, our understanding of how ecologically and economically important fisheries species use restored march habitat remains poorly resolved. Here, acoustic telemetry will be used to monitor movement of a model finfish, red drum, to assess biological connectivity within this projects MCAS via the constructed tidal channel and pond features and with the broader barataria basin. Specific objectives of this research are to 1) develop a sampling plan to deploy and maintain an array of acoustic receivers throughout the study area, 2) tag red drum to monitor presence and movement throughout the marsh creation area and 3) characterize patterns and drivers of habitat use and connectivity within the created marsh area.
