Description

The NOAA science advisory board (SAB) environmental information services working group (eiswg) has identified unmet opportunities for the federal and commercial sectors of the US weather enterprise to collaborate to provide improved weather radar information to the american public. This research proposal will analyze potential opportunities for federal and commercial collaboration. The results will provide benefits to the american public, underserved communities, and both the federal and commercial sectors of the weather enterprise. This research study is extremely timely as the weather enterprise begins to identify gaps, benefits, and areas of improvements for future radar networks. The overall goal of this proposal is to provide information for the weather enterprise on opportunities for improving the national weather radar network through the potential use of GAP-filling radars and siting of future radars. This work will take the form of two reports that will analyze both commercial sector GAP-filling technology offerings and options for radar siting in a next-generation weather radar network. The analysis of commercial technologies will focus on climavisions x-band radars using NOAA-provided data and case examples, as well as NWS/ROC chat logs. The analysis of future siting options will include the definition of a federal minimum backbone network to meet noaas mission, followed by a trade space analysis of future network design options using several metrics for equitable coverage across the nation.
