Description

Activities
The study aims to develop a novel approach to assess molt probability in lobsters based on key hormonal indicators. The project team will collect, observe, and sample lobsters throughout the molt cycle to gather a suite of biological indicators of molting. These data will be used to inform AI/machine learning to build a predictive model of molt probability that will be subsequently validated by expanded field sampling in year 2 of the project.
Intended beneficiaries
This proposed research addresses a high research priority identified by the asmfc lobster technical and stock assessment committees. The results will therefore assist in filling a GAP in growth data, which is considered a data-poor element of lobster life history. The resulting model to determine molt probability will also provide state and federal management agencies with a novel tool to predict the timing of molt during the season, with potential implications for the fishery and supply chain.
Subrecipient activities
As a subrecipient, maine department of marine resources (MEDMR) will coordinate efforts to collect, observe, and sample lobsters during year 1 of the proposed research. MEDMR will also facilitate connections between the project team and the lobster harvesters to increase sampling coverage in year 2 via dockside port sampling. The project team will also work with MEDMR to ensure the results of the proposed study are communicated to the asmfc lobster technical committee and other relevant state and federal agency partners to inform survey and management efforts.
