Description
- Activities
- Aligning with the program priorities, four interconnected activities will be performed: (1) we will integrate socioeconomic indicators of resilience into the american lobster stock assessment process by expanding prior research funded by the american lobster initiative; (2) we will use the outputs of our analysis to evaluate the socioeconomic implications of past regulatory change on the fishing fleet; (3) we will create a rapid-response system to share information we generated from our research with diverse stakeholders, and (4) we will provide training opportunities for early career researchers.
- Expected outcomes
- We seek funding support through the FY24 american lobster research program (# NOAA-OAR-SG-2024-25871) to expand and validate socioeconomic indicators of resilience across the region (maine to virginia) so they can be integrated into the atlantic states marine fisheries commission benchmark stock assessment for american lobster as fishery performance indicators. We also propose to use the indicators to evaluate how past regulation changes in the lobster fishery (such as gear and gauge size) have impacted the fishing industry by drawing on case studies within and beyond new england.
- Intended beneficiaries
- This project is the outgrowth of a three-year collaboration between the university of maine, department of marine resources, maine center for coastal fisheries, and the maine lobstermens association. This research aims to address a high priority need of the atlantic states marine fisheries commission and serve the lobster industry by helping to integrate socioeconomic data more effectively into the management process.
- Subrecipient activities
- The maine department of marine resources will serve as a subrecipient on this project. CO-PI reardon is a member of the american lobster stock assessment subcommittee and will work with the project team to ensure the research produced through this project is integrated into the stock assessment.
