Description
- Activities
- The project activities can be broken down into three major efforts. First, we will develop and validate a machine-learning model for estimating MD & SP from satellite data. Next, we will establish an automated ocean circulation and particle tracking model to forecast the transport and distribution of M & SP. Lastly, we will create a user-friendly, web-based dashboard to visualize MD & SP distributions and guide a community based marine debris collection effort. Our project activities align with the diversity, equity, and inclusion, justice and accessibility (DEIJA) framework to ensure inclusive participation and benefits. IT also ties into regional marine debris action plans by focusing on innovative solutions for marine debris detection, monitoring, and removal through advanced technologies and community engagement.
- Expected outcomes
- This project will advance the science of MD & SP detection and monitoring. The marine debris dashboard to be developed in this project will provide the first large-scale platform to encourage investment and testing of MD & SP removal technologies. The platform also provides a method for identifying the most impacted communities and engaging the public in ocean cleanup.
- Intended beneficiaries
- At the local scale, deliverables from this project will allow coastal communities to become more informed on this environmental issue allowing preventable action to be taken. For industry, deliverables from this project can be used to help design deployment strategies for new MD & SP removal technologies. At the government level, policy can be influenced by new science and data information made available through this project. Finally, the negative impact of MD & SP on marine ecosystems has been well documented. A wide-scale, community-based removal MD & SP has the immediate potential to improve the quality and abundance of living marine resources.
- Subrecipient activities
- The north carolina sea grant partner will engage with the public for the project, ensures administrative and reporting consistency, and provides long-term outreach and engagement capacity. The sub-recipient, a north carolina-based small tech business-fathom science, will develop the MD & SP detection, modeling, and data visualizations and dissemination.
