Description
- Activities
- Project activities will begin by convening an integrated leadership team composed of representatives from diverse groups capable of informing severe weather messaging. Based on this input, customized severe weather information will be developed in a variety of formats and then delivered to vietnamese-americans and weather communicators. This dissemination will encompass the sharing of lifesaving and risk reducing information immediately before and during severe weather events. In addition, training workshops will be conducted for both vietnamese-americans and weather communicators to enhance their utilization of the newly developed products and services. Comprehensive evaluation will be integrated into project activities to measure the extent to which preparedness gaps are addressed and disaster impacts reduced. This evaluation will provide invaluable insights and best practices for future initiatives aimed at enhancing coastal community resilience.
- Expected outcomes
- The primary outcomes from this project will be 1) increased understanding of weather-related risks and communication products by vietnamese-american families and businesses that will 2) improve decisions that are made when severe weather threatens the area. There will also be 3) increased understanding of the severe weather communications barriers by the weather communication community in the region and 4) use of novel or new approaches by the severe weather communications community in reaching those underserved communities.
- Intended beneficiaries
- The primary beneficiaries for this proposed work are vietnamese-americans residing in coastal regions in alabama, mississippi, and louisiana. These communities are particularly susceptible to severe weather events and encounter significant challenges in accessing relevant disaster preparedness information and resources due to their occupation in the seafood industry, compounded by language and cultural barriers. The secondary beneficiary is the severe weather communications community so that they can enhance their communications to this underrepresented community.
- Subrecipient activities
- Boat people SOS, a nonprofit organization serving vietnamese-american communities around the U.S. In the northern gulf of mexico region, the organization works closely with the fishing communities and other coastal residents to provide translation, health, education, legal, resilience and recovery services. Leveraging their expertise and community ties, they will lead the development and dissemination of vietnamese language on severe weather outreach education and communications in partnership with the national weather service and other weather communication authorities.
