Description
- Activities
- Youth from 4 disadvantaged and underserved high schools will learn and impart to local businesses information about the impact of marine debris on the environment and human health. Businesses will gain tools, resources, and knowledge on how to save money by reducing single-use plastic purchasing through alternative materials, as well as modifying processes in daily operations that reduce debris generation.
- Expected outcomes
- The project aims to engage at least 60 youth and 4 educators and 100 businesses. At least 32 businesses will commit to making plastic-reducing changes. Through community outreach events, 200 people will take pledges to commit to behavior changes to reduce their plastic waste footprint. Facilitated workshops will give students and businesses an opportunity to brainstorm with city leadership to help the city take additional steps to reduce its marine debris and plastics footprint. Beneficiaries: this project will engage those in the ecologically and commercially significant city of orlando, at the heart of the I-4 corridor region. By focusing on orlando, these impacts will be felt both locally and notably in downstream coastlines as 60-80% of marine litter starts on land and is then carried downstream by rivers and storm drains and ultimately into the ocean. In other regions where this program has been deployed, swaps away from plastic items have diverted as much as 581,900 plastic items, ultimately reducing plastic debris in their neighborhoods and on the coastlines.
- Subrecipient activities
- Ocean conservancy will train a florida sea grant fellow and 2 staff from the orlando-based nonprofit ideas for US, INC. To train students and support canvassing of businesses. Ocean conservancy will also play a central role in managing this project, engaging elected officials, leveraging media support, and adapting resource materials to ensure relevance to specific to orlando.
