Description

Expected outcomes
Outcomes include an improved attitude toward water quality and personal contributions, a reduction in debris entering regional water bodies through stormwater, cleaner urban neighborhoods and pride in the local environment, increased civic engagement and participation in environmental careers by urban youth, and increased adoption of debris capture technologies. O intended beneficiaries: we focus on environmental justice communities in three cities that are among the highest in child poverty and lowest in high school graduation rates in the US. While youth are the focal audience, we anticipate cascading impacts in each neighborhood and through informal events at partner institutions. O subrecipient activities: our partnership consists of local municipal agencies, premier non-profit conservation and education organizations, locally-engaged educational consultants, higher education, and new york sea grant (NYSG). Rochester institute of technology serves as the primary sub-recipient and will manage all project activities in collaboration with new york sea grant. RIT, university at buffalo, and syracuse university will manage debris collection and analysis in each location. Rits environmental educator, sea grant extension staff, and srgmf consulting will deliver programming at littatrap locations and run high school leadership programs. The seneca park ZOO society will provide on- and off-site programming, including community clean up events. The rochester museum and science center will develop and deliver on site programming to visitors.
