Description

Activities
The south carolina aquarium will provide project oversight throughout the three-year project. The aquarium will conduct workshops, host and support litter sweeps with data collection, and conduct data analyses to understand the most problematic debris, debris hotspots and trends over time. ECO-friendly supplies will be provided to community members and for events and festivals to reduce the amount of single-use plastic being used.
Expected outcomes
Marine debris reduction has long been identified as a priority for murrells inlet, but follow-through has been a challenge. This project will create lasting change in the marine debris reduction in this community. An outreach campaign that includes a website, social media platforms and a billboard are central to sharing information widely about the harms of plastic pollution and to celebrate wins in this project. These resources will live in perpetuity. Murrells inlet citizens will become trained citizen scientists, armed with alternatives to single-use plastics, and learn how to secure items on their docks. K-12 and college students will be educated on how to be part of solutions to marine debris. Members of the gullah geechee community will be offered entrepreneurship courses to empower financial growth within the community and sustainable practices will be used on the gullah geechee seafood trail.
Intended beneficiaries
Murrells inlet is well known for its fishing village and seafood restaurants and markets. As plastic pollution poses a threat to all marine life, fishers and consumers of seafood will greatly benefit from this project. The underserved gullah geechee community whose members rely heavily on subsistence fishing will also greatly benefit. As more travelers seek vacation spots with environmentally friendly practices, the entire murrells inlet community will benefit. Most of all, the murrells inlet estuary and all its inhabitants, including 12 threatened and endangered species will benefit.
Subrecipient activities
Coalition partners (university, government, nonprofits, businesses and private groups) will work together to create an effective public awareness campaign, host listening sessions in underserved communities, and engage students in outreach and paid internships to achieve the goals of the project. Businesses and community members will be surveyed to understand their knowledge and use of plastics and the results will help guide our work. Because a majority of the litter characterized in past waterfront cleanups comes from nearby businesses, the development of an inlet-friendly business guide will serve as an important business resource.
