Description
The atlantic sea scallop fishery is a management success and one of the most valuable fisheries in the U.S. However, changing ocean conditions driven by climate change and ocean acidification (OA) may cause declines in scallop availability, harvest, and revenue. Scallop habitats in the northeast and mid-atlantic already experience suboptimal temperature and carbonate chemistry conditions episodically. Regional oceanographic models predict that these conditions will continue and worsen in the future under the most severe climate change scenario, predicting that scallop habitats will experience stressful conditions for most of the year by the end of the century. This proposal builds upon existing datasets and modeling tools, including annual stock assessment survey datasets, physiological laboratory datasets, oceanographic models, dynamic energy budget models, and larval transport models, to evaluate the impacts of changing ocean conditions on scallop population dynamics. Important environmental drivers and potential management strategies will be integrated into the current stock assessment model to predict long-term impacts, inform adaptive management for sustainability, and help the industry build resilience to anticipated impacts.
