Description

Striped marlin (kajikia audax) are a highly valued recreational fishing species that face high levels of bycatch in commercial fisheries. Additionally, striped marlin management is limited by a lack of understanding of their habitat and population structure. I will employ a resistance surface model using fisheries-dependent and -independent data to identify movement corridors and detect patterns in population connectivity under climate change. The formulation of the resistance surface model will include a novel component of knowledge about striped marlin movement and habitat preferences from indigenous and recreational fishers. This knowledge represents thousands of years of fishing practice and innumerable hours spent tracking striped marlin.
