Description
NOAA fisheries and the office of national marine sanctuaries (ONMS) will prioritize this historic IRA funding to prepare for climate change, support NOAA's designations of new national marine sanctuaries, and enhance protection of america's marine resources, coastal communities, and economies. A critical area focused on tackling the impacts of climate relevant to NOAA fisheries and marine protected area management is essential data acquisition (EDA) and management, including passive acoustic monitoring data. This funded work will advance analytical collaboration to address ONMS needs for higher-level soundscape decomposition techniques that can derive estimates of the varying biological, anthropogenic and environmental contributions to a sanctuary's soundscape, including improved tools for baseline assessments and tracking of trends in these contributions and associated sound levels over time. ONMS maintains a nationally coordinated underwater sound monitoring network across the national marine sanctuary system (ONMS sound monitoring). This program works with partners to study sound within ten existing and two proposed national marine sanctuaries off the U.S. East coast, in the gulf of mexico, off the west coast and in the pacific islands region. The ONMS sound monitoring network supports the program's understanding and protection of sanctuaries including: restoration efforts; effectiveness of and compliance with regulations; quantifying sanctuary usages, and assessing human impacts. In collaboration with ncei, ONMS sound monitoring has developed a PAM data management plan to archive their PAM data and standard data products in a publicly accessible location to be compliant with parr. The NOAA passive acoustic data archive at ncei provides the perfect solution for this and already holds a subset of ONMS data.
