Description
As ecosystembased approaches to fisheries management continue to become increasingly accepted and as climate change continues, IT is important to include and examine trophic structures, climate impacts, and mitigative scenarios in life cycle modeling of salmon that are part of the california current ecosystem. Upper columbia and snake river springrun chinook salmon are of particular interest because they are listed under the endangered species act. One of the most important yet relatively understudied life stages of salmon is the marine life stage, which is related to smolttoadultreturn survival, adult return abundance, and adult age structure. Although IT is known that salmon are highly vulnerable to climate change and a warming ocean, associated bottomup/topdown processes, species collocation, and spatio-temporal oceanography can be better understood and examined together to help assess mitigative options for increasing salmon adult returns. Furthermore, because the ecosystem of salmon includes the freshwater system, carryover effects across habitats are also important to include in their life cycle modeling. The marine model, with carryover effects from the freshwater life stage and inputs from the marine habitat, will be integrated into life cycle models to compare salmon viability under a variety of scenarios of climate change and management actions.
