About this award
This federal Cooperative Agreement award, issued by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) under the Cooperative Institute (Inter-Agency Funded Activities) program (CFDA 11.405), provides $224,730 to the Regents of the University of Michigan to develop a calibrated, 3-dimensional MOM6 hydrodynamic model for Lake Michigan-Huron and explore MOM6 coupling frameworks for an expanded Earth system model. The award period runs from August 1, 2024 to July 31, 2026. This project aims to create an ensemble modeling framework, combining the Great Lakes Evaporation/Hydrodynamic System Model (GLESM) with the MOM6 hydrodynamic model, to improve ecosystem and fisheries management capabilities in the Great Lakes region.
Description
This proposed research is to 1) develop a calibrated, 3-dimensional MOM6 hydrodynamic model for lake michigan-huron 2) explore MOM6 coupling framework for expanded earth system model (e.g., waves, ICE, ecosystem, etc.). The proposed work is a new task of NOAA OAR climate ecosystem and fisheries initiative (CEFI) for regional application: great lakes. This project provides a rare opportunity for glerl and ciglr to develop an ensemble modeling framework (i.e., glesm + MOM6) to inform and support ecosystem and fisheries management in the great lakes. While glesm is a strong earth system model, additional guidance provided by MOM6 and the broader NOAA-gfdl suite can only serve to improve our earth system forecasts.
