Description
A transformative method for processing deep-sea sediment samples will allow researchers to conduct invertebrate identification using automated microscopy and computer-based image recognition. The intent is to provide rapid, large-scale baseline biodiversity data on deep-sea infauna and support deep-sea ecological impact assessments, restoration, and resource management. The first task is to develop a conceptual scheme to identify valuable meiofaunal parameters suitable for deep-sea monitoring practices based on availability, efficacy, importance, accessibility, and technological readiness. Using the parameters, the project will develop methods for fast, automated processing of sediment infauna and then integrate innovative, lab-based optical technologies and machine learning for meiofauna recognition for scientific and industrial deep-sea monitoring. The laboratory-based project will use samples already collected from multiple deep-sea habitats, including deep-sea coral, chemosynthetic environments, submarine canyons, shipwrecks, seamounts, and soft-sediment environments.
