This Cooperative Agreement, awarded by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) under the Marine Debris Program (CFDA 11.999), provides $521,666 to the Galveston Bay Foundation (GBF) to install up to three litter booms in the Greater Houston area. GBF will conduct routine maintenance on the booms, establish a new citizen science program for trash removal and cataloguing, and work with a sub-awardee, Osprey Initiative, LLC, to procure and deploy additional trash traps in Houston waterways. Prior to installation, GBF will coordinate community cleanup events to remove legacy debris. The project aims to remove up to 1,500 pounds of debris per year per site and engage up to 250 volunteers in removal efforts. GBF will also implement educational programming and outreach to increase awareness of litter and trash issues, encourage behavioral changes, and promote environmental stewardship in the Houston and Galveston Bay region. The award period runs from October 1, 2024 through April 30, 2028.
