The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) awarded a $3,400,000 Cooperative Agreement under the FY2023 Bipartisan Infrastructure Law National Estuarine Research Reserve Habitat Restoration and Conservation Competition (CFDA 11.473 - Office for Coastal Management) to Kakoo Oiwi, a non-profit Native Hawaiian organization. The funding will be used to increase climate resilience of coastal communities within coastal counties through habitat restoration planning, engineering and design projects, habitat restoration implementation projects, and land conservation projects. Specifically, Kakoo Oiwi will use these funds to restore 40 acres within the Heeia National Estuarine Research Reserve, applying indigenous knowledge relating to wetland agroecology (loi wai) as a means to increase community resilience in regard to climate change, food security, and economic stability. The award period is from Aug 1, 2024 to Jul 31, 2027.
