Description

Purpose for the award: develop a generalized edmf PBL scheme to unify the surface-driven MF and shallow cumulus MF such that IT is applicable either in dry conditions or in the presence of shallow cumulus. Develop a physically-based approach of scale-adaptive mass-flux tapering under VWS evaluate the generalized edmf scheme from hafs retrospective runs during the 2024 hurricane season, which is part of the hurricane forecast improvement program (HFIP). Activities: develop the code of the generalized edmf PBL scheme that unifies the mass fluxes for clear and shallow cumulus boundary layers. Implement the prototype generalized edmf scheme into the CM1 model and perform LES and SCM tests for two cases of shallow cumulus boundary layers analyze the LES and SCM tests, determine the key parameters within the generalized edmf PBL scheme. Develop code of the two approaches of mass-flux tapering under vertical wind shear within the edmf PBL scheme test the two approaches by performing C
