Description

The ocean represents the largest habitable ecosystem on our planet, yet less than 5% of that volume has been explored, and nearly 50% of marine life are yet to be described. To close this GAP, we need to increase our capacity for biological observations by building distributed networks of underwater sensors, vehicles, and automated data analysis pipelines. To address this need, underwater imaging, a major sensing modality for marine biology, is being deployed on a diverse array of platforms. However, to scale these efforts, we need to enable automation of detection and classification tasks in visual data, and to do so in real-time and on-board to enable large-scale deployments of uncrewed vehicles. Here the team proposes to develop artificial intelligence-integrated vehicle control algorithms using both deep learning and reinforcement LE
