Description

Shellfish accumulate saxitoxins and, when consumed, produce one of the most severe forms of food poisoning. Mitigating the potential harm from a poisoning event is conducted using food and drug administration's (FDA) national shellfish sanitation program (nssp) approved methods. Currently, the receptor binding assay (RBA) is approved for determining PST concentration in mussels and is utilized by the sitka tribe of alaska environmental research laboratory (staerl), yet this assay is not approved for application to other shellfish species. For use in regulatory decisions, the RBA must be evaluated for efficacy in determining PST contamination in other shellfish species. The goal of this proposal is to expand the species of shellfish approved under the PST RBA in FDA's nssp. This will be accomplished in partnership with staerl through a series
