Description

This project aims to compare and validate a new low-cost digital holography based cell imaging platform (aqusens) against the imaging flow cytobot (ifcb) towards increasing capacity building for harmful algal bloom (HAB) cell detection within the context of routine monitoring and targeted deployments. Platforms that detect HAB cells have proven invaluable for early warning of potentially problematic species (e.g. flowcam, ifcb). These instruments can monitor trends in cell concentrations such that local and regional management decisions can be made proactively versus reactively. The ifcb is field deployable for near real-time in situ detection, however broader adoption into monitoring programs, existing networked platforms, and smaller entities (e.g. aquaculture facilities, aquariums, targeted fisheries) has been hampered by cost and expertise required for operation, maintenance, servicing and troubleshooting. Recently, an expanded network of ten ifcb's was established along
