Description

Coastal hypoxia - levels of dissolved oxygen in coastal marine waters so low that valuable marine animals are harmed - is a growing challenge for fishery and other resource managers in the united states and around the world. Climate-change driven DE-oxygenation and eutrophication threaten to increase the prevalence and impacts of coastal hypoxia. Hypoxia is intrinsically difficult to monitor and predict in the coastal ocean. The appearance of hypoxia is patchy and intermittent, due to the influence of complex, coupled BIO-physical processes. As a result, a single mooring or an individual, seasonal, ship-based survey is insufficient to accurately characterize the dissolved oxygen conditions over the shelf. For managers, this uncertainty can impair their ability to prepare for climate-ready fisheries as populations are redistributed and essential habitats are degraded by hypoxia. For the fishing community, crucial information gaps of where and when hypoxic zones have formed can mean depl
