Description

The smithsonian environmental research center will partner with the rappahannock tribe and george mason university to track targeted fish during their annual migration using acoustic telemetry technology, including the deployment of 24 new acoustic receivers at key sites on the mainstem of the targeted rivers (patapsco river, the potomac river, and the rappahannock river) and tagging approximately 50 individual fish annually. The research team will collect otoliths and scales from approximately 100 fish annually to assess population structures of river herring in the three rivers. Finally, scientists will analyze the collected telemetry and biochemistry data to assess differences in the migrating fish. These tasks will result in several products and tools that will be useful for fishery management decision making.
