Cooperative Agreement NA22OAR4170639
- This $220,478 Cooperative Agreement award from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) under the Sea Grant Support program (CFDA 11.417) will be administered by the Maine Center for Coastal Fisheries (MCCF) to improve the understanding of the economics of the New England lobster fishery. The key products and services to be delivered under this award include: 1) Co-designing an updated cost and effort survey and questionnaire with a project advisory group, including fuel...
- This Cooperative Agreement, awarded by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) under the Sea Grant Support program (CFDA 11.417), provides $310,043 in funding from October 1, 2024 to September 30, 2026. The overarching goal is to integrate socioeconomic indicators of resilience into the American lobster stock assessment process, evaluate the socioeconomic implications of past regulatory changes on the fishing fleet, create a rapid-response system to share research findings...
- This Cooperative Agreement award of $304,255 from the Department of Commerce National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) supports a two-year project under the Sea Grant Support program (CFDA 11.417) to study the impact of offshore wind farm noise on American lobster. The project will gather data on lobster physiology and behavior in response to anthropogenic noise from offshore wind development. Key activities include deploying hydrophones on commercial lobster traps in control and...
- This $2,175,631 Cooperative Agreement award from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) under the Sea Grant Support program (CFDA 11.417) aims to address the complex challenges facing the American lobster fishery in the Northeast region. The project will take a collaborative approach to design and implement research, extension, and outreach activities that align with the needs, interests, and questions of industry, managers, researchers, and communities. Key activities...
- The Aifish LLC was awarded a $300,000 project grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration under the Small Business Innovation Research Program to develop advanced data analysis tools for electronic monitoring in fisheries management. NOAA's SBIR program supports small businesses in stimulating technological innovation to meet federal research needs. Aifish will provide data analytics software to help fisheries managers efficiently process large volumes of video and sensor data...
- This 12-month Project Grant award from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) under the Unallied Management Projects (CFDA 11.454) program provides $148,666 to Mote Marine Laboratory, Inc. to engage two commercial vertical line reef fish vessels as citizen scientists. The vessels will apply electronic monitoring (EM) systems to generate imagery data on catch composition, effort metrics, catch condition, and release attributes in the South Atlantic snapper-grouper complex...
- The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration awarded a $543,846 Project Grant to the Smelts Sea Mammal Education Learning Technology Society under the Fisheries Development and Utilization Research and Development Grants and Cooperative Agreements Program (CFDA 11.427). The grant will fund Smelts to develop and deliver ropeless lobster fishing gear to three fishermen, one in Maine and two in Massachusetts, between December 2022 and October 2024. Specifically, Smelts will outfit the...
- This $406,199 Cooperative Agreement award from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) under the Sea Grant Support program (CFDA 11.417) will fund a project to study lobster populations along the outer Cape Cod area. Scientists and fishermen will collaborate to collect detailed data on juvenile and adult lobsters, including their size, sex, presence of eggs, and water temperature. This data will be used to develop computer models that predict the timing and location of lobster...
- Field Data Services LLC will conduct a $297,032 technical feasibility study under a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program project grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Department of Commerce. The study aims to determine the commercial viability of a new solid state lidar sensor chip for detecting migrating anadromous fish in small spawning streams. Field Data Services will build an automated test system to characterize the lidar's ability to detect...
- This federal Cooperative Agreement award of $289,627 from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) under the Sea Grant Support program (CFDA 11.417) supports the Department of Marine Resources Maine (DMR) in understanding the growth and environmental effects on American lobster (Homarus americanus) populations. The project, titled "Recruitment Building Blocks: Understanding American Lobster (Homarus americanus) Growth and Environmental Effects During", will be...
PURPOSE: THE PURPOSE OF THIS AWARD IS TO PROVIDE LOBSTERMEN THE NECESSARY DATA IMAGING TOOLS TO NAVIGATE A CHANGING ENVIRONMENTAL AND REGULATORY LANDSCAPE. THE RESEARCHERS PROPOSE NEW SENSOR DEPLOYMENTS, MODEL DEVELOPMENT, AND DATA PRODUCTS THAT WILL EFFECTIVELY DELIVER CRITICAL INFORMATION TO THE FLEET. ACTIVITIES TO BE PERFORMED: THE RESEARCHERS WILL OUTFIT DOZENS OF COMMERCIAL VESSELS WITH MICRO-COMPUTERS, SENSORS, AND VARIOUS SHIP-TO-SHORE COMMUNICATION MODES. GIVING VESSEL OPERATORS ACCESS TO REALTIME INFORMATION BOTH ON THEIR WHEELHOUSE AND HOME-BASED INTERNET-CONNECTED SCREENS WILL PROVIDE AN ADDITIONAL SOURCE OF INFORMATION THEY CAN USE TO ADJUST THEIR FISHING ACTIVITY. WITH DIRECT FEEDBACK FROM STAKEHOLDERS, THE RESEARCHERS WILL CONTINUE TO IMPROVE THE HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE. EXPECTED OUTCOMES: IMPROVING ENVIRONMENTAL DATA COLLECTION AND SHARING WITHIN THE GULF OF MAINE SHOULD HELP LOBSTERMEN WORK IN WAYS THAT ARE MORE STRATEGIC, SURGICAL, COST-EFFECTIVE, AND ULTIMATELY PROFI
