Description

These innovations will protect the marine resources and the food security of those relying on these waters by effectively using BIO alternatives to expanded polystyrene (EPS) and other fossil-based and single-use plastics currently used extensively by the alaskan seafood industry and food outlets. This approach to addressing the marine debris issue is a high priority to our nation and alaska specifically, as shown in the save our seas 2.0 act's passing in 2020. During the two year grant period, the following activities will be conducted: 1) educate students and the local community on single-use plastic alternatives and compostable bioplastics, 2) engage students and local stakeholders (local seafood processors, recreational fishers, shellfish growers, and local aquaculture businesses) in developing a compostable option
