About this award
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Marine Debris Program awarded a $6 million cooperative agreement to the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) to support marine debris assessment and removal projects from January 2022 to December 2026. The funding stems from the Extending Government Funding and Delivering Emergency Assistance Act of 2021 and will support debris removal and disposal efforts in coastal communities impacted by the 2020-2021 hurricane seasons, with an emphasis on debris within directly affected municipalities. Limited funding may also build state and territorial capacity to manage marine debris after severe storm events. NFWF will award subgrants under its Hurricane Response Marine Debris Removal Fund to local governments for debris assessment, collection, and proper disposal to aid recovery from recent storms and prevent further environmental damage. The work furthers the goals of NOAA's Marine Debris Program to identify sources of, assess, reduce, and prevent marine debris and its impacts in coastal United States areas.
