Description

A primary driver is rising atmospheric CO2 which also drives ocean acidification (OA) globally. OA in coastal systems is complicated by the many different coastal processes that affect the carbonate system including terrestrial and riverine inputs, meteorologic forcing, and eutrophication linked to coastal development. The latter can drive OA at depth through intensified respiration and hypoxia. These chemical changes are altering the competitive balance among coastal organisms including harmful algal bloom species (habs), a diverse group that harms marine ecosystems in a variety of ways including fouling, hypoxia, and the production of human and animal toxins. Dinoflagellates are overrepresented among toxic habs and many migrate vertically to exploit opposing gradients of light and nutrients in the water column. They are therefore well adapted to increasing
