Description

This project addresses brep priority 2 by accelerating adoption of active selection bycatch reduction systems and improving their use through experience and familiarity, while continuing to develop the underlying technology. This system was developed under a recently completed brep project. Investigators will build and prepare five actsel systems, and provide them to trawlers for use during routine fishing operations, actsel bridge-net communications will be upgraded from one-way binary signals (circuit switching) to two-way serial communication, allowing more flexibility and feedback on reel positions and battery power, and best-management practices for actsel will be collected and communicated for use and lessons-learned from at-sea deployments.
