Description
This tag deployment system will enable tagging leatherbacks safely, at-sea to study their post-release survivorship and fill scientific information gaps for ecosystem based fishery management. Investigators will design and produce final prototypes of 1) a custom tag anchor, and 2) a power-assisted delivery device (padd). Final designs will be tested on leatherback carapace samples as established in prior work, tissue samples will be evaluated for carapace fractures and damages to underlying connective tissue, implantation force measurements will feed into the development of the power-assisted delivery device, and results will be provided to NOAA researchers and prepared for peer-reviewed publication. Six sets of delivery devices and anchors will be manufactured and provided to NOAA researc
