Description

Hawksbill sea turtles (eretmochelys imbricata) are among the rarest sea turtles in the pacific ocean and are classified as endangered under the U.S. Endangered species act and critically endangered by the international union for conservation of nature. The overall goal of the hawaii island hawksbill project is to support the management, conservation, protection, and enhancement of hawksbill sea turtle populations and their nesting habitats in hawaii by carrying out research and conservation activites at the most important nesting habitats along the southern coast of hawaii island. The primary objectives of this project include: 1) monitoring nesting beaches to identify and quantify nesting females and nests; 2) determining hatching success and hatchling production and protect nests to maximize the number of hatchlings that safely reach the ocean; 3) controlling non-native species on nesting beaches to reduce predation on nests, eggs and hatchlings; 4) providing improved nesting habitat
