This Cooperative Agreement award, funded by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) under the Cooperative Institute (Inter-Agency Funded Activities) program (CFDA 11.405), aims to develop technological approaches leveraging optics and acoustics to estimate the abundance and size of red snapper in the Gulf of Mexico and South Atlantic. The University of Miami, through its Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science (RSMAS), will partner with Florida International...
This $178,184 Project Grant award from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) under the Unallied Management Projects (CFDA 11.454) program supports the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FFWCC) in testing management strategies that may reduce red snapper discards and improve angler satisfaction in the snapper-grouper fishery south of Cape Canaveral through the Florida Keys. The key objectives of this 2-year project are to: 1) collaborate with recreational...
This $1,339,868 federal Cooperative Agreement award, issued by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) under the Ocean Exploration grant program (CFDA 11.011), supports a research project to characterize the mesophotic coral ecosystems (MCEs) and associated fish assemblages along the western coast of Puerto Rico. The project aims to leverage advanced technologies like deep diving, genomics, and underwater imaging to comprehensively describe the biodiversity, habitat use, and...
This Cooperative Agreement award from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) under the Unallied Management Projects (CFDA 11.454) federal grant program provides $263,862.00 to evaluate and document whether spawning of priority snapper/grouper species is occurring at the South Cape Lookout (SCL) and Warsaw Hole (WH) Spawning Special Management Zones (SSMZs). The study aims to fill a data gap and provide the necessary information on spawning in these protected areas to inform...
This federal Cooperative Agreement award is provided by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) under the Gulf Coast Ecosystem Restoration Science, Observation, Monitoring, and Technology (RESTORE Science) program (CFDA 11.451). The award totaling $6,921,319 will fund the "Optimization and Expansion of Gulf-Wide Video Survey Efforts to Better Characterize Temporal and Spatial Variability in Reef Fish Assemblages in Response to Drivers at Multiple Scales: The G-FISHER...
This federal Project Grant award of $597,278 was issued by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) under the Fisheries Development and Utilization Research and Development Grants and Cooperative Agreements Program (CFDA 11.427). The funding supports the development of a non-lethal genetic technique to efficiently determine the sex of three commercially and recreationally important fish species: red snapper, gray triggerfish, and gag grouper. The research will be conducted by...
This $690,650 Project Grant awarded by the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) supports the development and testing of a field-ready, cost-effective sound playback system for conducting eco-acoustic and marine larval settlement studies. The system will enable researchers to easily manipulate and introduce sound cues in field experiments to investigate how sound impacts diverse marine fauna, with a focus on coral reef ecosystems. The 2-year effort will build,...
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) awarded a $148,106 Cooperative Agreement under the Unallied Management Projects (CFDA 11.454) federal grant program to the University of South Carolina. The award will address critical gaps in red hind population demographics and life history in preparation for stock assessments in the U.S. Virgin Islands. The research objectives align with recommendations from the SEDAR 46 Caribbean data-limited stock assessment, including...
This $598,886 Project Grant awarded by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) under the Fisheries Development and Utilization Research and Development Grants and Cooperative Agreements Program (CFDA 11.427) will support research to address two key barriers to certification of the federal Gulf of Mexico otter trawl fishery: (1) low observer coverage and (2) lack of full characterization of bycatch species. The project will build on previous successful studies applying...
This $199,676 National Science Foundation project grant supports research on the impact of the loss of the keystone sea urchin species Diadema antillarum on Caribbean coral reef community structure and function. The award period is from September 1, 2022 to August 31, 2023. The grantee, Florida International University, will utilize innovative imaging tools and spatially explicit analyses to quantify fine-scale temporal changes in the community composition, size distributions, and spatial...

HE CARIBBEAN FISHERY MANAGEMENT COUNCIL WILL PROVIDE FUNDING TO THREE CONTRACTORS TO DO A COORDINATED VISUAL, ACOUSTIC, AND OCEANOGRAPHIC ASSESSMENT OF KEY GROUPER SPAWNING AGGREGATIONS SITES OFF THE SOUTHWEST OF PUERTO RICO AND EAST COAST OF ST. CROIX, U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS, WHICH ARE KNOWN SPAWNING AGGREGATION SITES FOR RED HIND (EPINEPHELUS GUTTATUS). THE COUNCIL WILL QUANTIFY RED HIND REPRODUCTIVE ACTIVITY AND RELATIVE ABUNDANCES AT KNOWN SPAWNING AGGREGATION SITES TO 1) MEASURE ABUNDANCE OF GROUPERS IN-SITU WITH MULTIPLE TECHNOLOGIES (I.E., DIVER UNDERWATER VISUAL CENSUS, STEREO DIVER OPERATED VIDEO, REMOTELY OPERATED VEHICLE VIDEO, AND PASSIVE ACOUSTIC MONITORING); 2) DETERMINE THE TEMPORAL VARIABILITY IN SOUND PRODUCTION AND ABUNDANCE OF GROUPERS; AND 3) DEVELOP A MONITORING SURVEY DESIGN FOR GROUPER SPAWNING AGGREGATION SITES THAT CAN BE DEPLOYED REMOTELY AND REPLICATED IN DIFFERENT DEPTHS, HABITATS AND LOCATIONS. THIS RESEARCH WILL PROVIDE VALIDATION OF DIFFERENT TECHNOLOGIES AN
