About this award

This Cooperative Agreement award from the Department of the Interior's Bureau of Land Management (BLM) under the Secure Rural Schools and Community Self-Determination Act (CFDA 15.234) will support the Marys River Watershed Council (MRWC) in developing a process to work with the BLM and U.S. Forest Service (USFS) to remove downed trees from forest roads for use in restoration projects in the Marys River and Midcoast watersheds of Oregon. The $124,999.71 award will facilitate the acquisition and transport of large woody debris (LWD) material needed for stream restoration to help meet habitat connectivity and complexity benchmarks, benefiting salmonid populations on BLM and USFS lands. This project aids federal and national forest lands by providing rapid response road clearing while also enabling important watershed restoration work adjacent to federally managed areas.

Description

This proposals goal is to develop a process for working with the BLM and USFS to remove downed trees from forest roads for use in restoration projects in both the marys river watershed council (mrwc) and midcoast watersheds council (mcwc) watershed areas. The salvage log fund will be key in facilitating future restoration projects that add large wood in stream, in tidal channels, and on the floodplains in order to improve habitat connectivity and complexity in the marys river and mid coast watersheds. This projects objectives are for the mrwc and mcwc to acquire and transport suitable LWD material needed for stream restoration projects in our watersheds to meet the state or federal large wood benchmarks that will restore watershed processes. This project aids federal and national forest lands by providing rapid response road clearing while alsofacilitating important restoration work adjacent to federally managed lands, benefiting the aquatic systems onblm and USFS managed lands. All source reaches that provide spawning and incubation habitat in the marysriver and midcoast watersheds have the potential of benefiting salmonid populations on both USFS and blmownerships. From a watershed scale perspective, the restoration of aquatic habitats needs at the very least tosecure access to, protect and enhance those morphologically unique reaches where actual production (spawning)can occur.
