The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) awarded a $394,579.44 Cooperative Agreement under the Threatened and Endangered Species Program (CFDA 15.246) to the Monarch Joint Venture, a non-profit organization, to conduct a 2-year case study documenting the seasonality and activity of monarch butterflies within the Cosumnes River Watershed in California. The project aims to refine a scalable protocol for evaluating monarch activity across similar landscapes to provide land managers with temporally-specific best management practices that may be transferred or modified for other regions. Key activities include conducting surveys and establishing monitoring plots to determine when and how monarchs use available habitat within the watershed, as well as enhancing up to 5 acres of habitat in key areas to support monarch and pollinator conservation. The findings from this study are intended to benefit pollinators, monarch species, conservation practitioners, and organizations engaged in monarch and habitat monitoring.
