Description
This collection is scientifically and educationally significant and was found primarily on BLM land prior to prpa. The acquisition of the collection and partial curation was previously funded by the BLM. The remainder of the collection will be unpacked and archivally stored in cabinets. Specimens will be cataloged, and data will be uploaded to our publicly accessible database (specific locality data will be encumbered). With the funding we will purchase new cabinets to store the specimens and hire two collection assistants to complete the work.administration DOI priorities this project will support the biden-harris administration priority executive order 14008: tackling the climate crisis at home and abroad and the DOI priority: accelerating responsible development of clean energy on public lands and waters. This project will generate fossil locality data that will be reported to the BLM to contribute to the blms potential fossil yield classification system (pyfc). This system is used to assess the environmental impact of projects involving surface disturbance and land use planning. Contributing data to the pyfc helps streamline the process of environmental assessment during nepa review of renewable energy installations. Additionally, research on these specimens could inform our understanding of how populations of marine organisms respond to environmental change. This project will also support the biden-harris administration priority executive order 14005: ensuring the future is made in all of america by all of americas workers. We will be hiring two american workers, one of which will be a student or recent graduate who can use the experience to start their career. We will also be purchasing museum cabinets from a company, steel fixture manufacturing company, that produces all their products start to finish at a plant located in topeka, kansas.informing BLM actions this project supports blms management of paleontological resources on BLM lands with necessary, up-to-date information on the nature, distribution, and significance of paleontological resources on BLM lands that will aid in the proper evaluation and stewardship of those resources. This project will also inform BLM management actions regarding projects that involve surface disturbance and land use planning. We enable this by contributing to the pfyc and by providing data to consultants providing monitoring and field assessments for projects on BLM land.expected outcomes scientists and the public will be able to access a scientifically and educationally significant collection of fossils found on BLM land. The specimens will be fully integrated into the geoscience collection of the new mexico museum of natural history and science, an american alliance of museums accredited museum with a strong history of public engagement and research. The specimens will be stored in cabinets, organized, and inventoried so that they are easily accessible for visiting researchers, loans, and exhibits. The specimens will be stored according to museum standards, ensuring that they are available for the above uses in perpetuity. Information from this project will become part of our public database, available through our website for anyone to access, including researchers, land managers, and the public. Of course, specific locality information is kept confidential and will only be made available to legitimate users. Exhibition of fossils from the project and their use in public programs will be supported by scientific publication and research on the localities and fossils. The georeferenced locality data and specimen data will also be made available to BLM staff to aid in the paleontology programs activities and to inform decision making on land use.
